Oudenaarde
About this Place
Oudenaarde is a small historic city on the River Scheldt in East Flanders, best known for its striking Gothic Town Hall and long tradition of tapestry-making. The surrounding area forms part of the Flemish Ardennes, a landscape of rolling hills and small towns quite different from the flatter country found across much of Flanders.
The city and surrounding villages also have a long brewing tradition. Brouwerij Roman is based in nearby Mater, while Brouwerij Liefmans has deep roots in Oudenaarde itself and is particularly associated with the region’s brown and fruit-beer traditions.
Brewery: Brouwerij Roman
Visitor notes
Brouwerij Roman is in Mater, a small village just outside the centre of Oudenaarde. Brewery tours are available, although visitors should check the brewery website carefully as there are some limitations around tour days, group sizes and languages. The brewery also has a bar which can be visited without taking a tour.
Brouwerij Liefmans is based in Oudenaarde itself, beside the Scheldt. The historic brewery can also be visited on organised tours, which explore the old brewing site and the brewery’s long association with Oudenaarde. Current arrangements should be checked in advance.
