About this Brewery

Brouwerij Kazematten is a small city brewery in Ypres, operating from the historic casemates beneath the city’s old fortifications. Founded in 2014 by families associated with St.Bernardus and Rodenbach, it restored a working city brewery to Ypres after more than 35 years.

Its Wipers Times beers draw on the First World War connection. “Wipers” was British soldiers’ phonetic pronunciation of Ypres, and The Wipers Times was the witty satirical newspaper they produced in these casemates between 1916 and 1918. The core range includes Wipers Times Blond (6.2%), Dubbel (6.5%) and Tripel (8.2%), alongside the saison Tremist.

Leroy Breweries acquired Kazematten in February 2026. Its recipes, character and visitor experience are intended to remain unchanged.

The brewery is open on Saturday afternoons, with bookable guided visits on Fridays and Saturdays.

Curator's Note

We visited in May 2026. The brewery's location and history make it unique and therefore worth a side-quest. Our guide - the chief brewer - was exceptionally knowledgeable and gave us a very entertaining tour. The tour came with the obligatory sampling of their brews.

This has the look and feel of a working brewery with a bar attached and has a great atmosphere to match. While there isn't a shop per se, you can buy beers and perhaps a glass - ask the staff and they'll let you know what they have available.
