About this Brewery

Place: Brussels

Brasserie Surréaliste was founded in Brussels in 2019 by brothers Édouard and Charles Grison, although its origins go back to 2015, when Édouard began experimenting with homebrewing in the family garage.

The brothers developed the idea of creating a brewery that combined craft beer with art, music and hospitality. Their flagship Surréaliste Pale Ale appeared in 2019, helping establish a reputation for modern, hop-forward beers.

The brewery found a permanent home in a striking 1932 Art Deco former banana warehouse in Brussels’ Dansaert district. Brewing began there in 2021, using a ten-hectolitre brewhouse, while the wider site was developed into a brewery, bar, restaurant, beer shop and cultural space.

Brasserie Surréaliste forms part of the newer generation of Brussels craft breweries, combining Belgian brewing know-how with contemporary beer styles, strong visual identity and a deliberately unconventional approach to the brewery experience.

Curator photograph from a visit to Brasserie Surréaliste

Brasserie Surréaliste offers something quite different from a conventional Belgian brewery visit.

The large, dramatically designed venue has exposed brickwork, industrial features and a spacious main bar, with a DJ area overlooking the room. Brewing takes place downstairs, while the public spaces are devoted to drinking, dining and socialising.

The beer selection combines Surréaliste's own contemporary styles with guest beers from other breweries, including international producers.

Food is available, and the venue also hosts music and events. The atmosphere is a lively, contemporary bar and restaurant, rather than a more traditional brewery taproom.

The result is a distinctive addition to Brussels' beer scene: a working brewery that has made hospitality, design and entertainment central to the visitor experience.
